Morgan Manley
1. How are we affected by the pieces of ourselves that we reveal or give away to others?
2. In our relationships, no matter the depth, we are constantly deciding which parts of ourselves
to present to others on both a conscious and unconscious level. I wanted to create visual
representations of this dispersal of information using textures imposed onto black and white
portraits. I chose black and white to prevent distractions and create a formal atmosphere. I
wanted to peel away the layers of the people I photographed, literally in some cases (Image 8) to
showcase the differences in the level of the removal or alteration of the self. Images 1-3 have
superficial textures, and therefore do not significantly impact the individuals. Images 4-6 imply
more drastic changes, with large pieces of the face being completely removed. Image 7 is also
more surface level, but is meant to illustrate healing from the damage done by the severing of a
connection. This is to show how changes can still be reflected on the individual, while still
allowing new growth to occur. All images are meant to caution the viewer, as it is always
possible to lose oneself when changing too much for others.
