How did pop art influence surrealistic photography?
I decided to explore the use of color, extreme saturation, layering, and manipulation/
disfiguration to depict the major influence of pop art in surrealistic photography. My photos
depict normality as a subjective concept and that there is always “more than what meets the eye”.
They are connected to explore Andy Warhol’s idea of merging art with commercial work,
creating a new vibrant world from a simple picture, and stirring a dynamic and animated feel. I
would begin my photo process with selecting several different images that could potentially
create a single abstract photo. Then further altering the colors and structure of the subjects, I
would combine them into a collage of unique style and into a new world of altered reality. My
portfolio depicts an investigation of how something as simple as a photograph can be
transformed into a colorful world that consists of layers upon layers of editing, with each photo
having its own individual process. All of my photos are open to interpretation which further
extends the purpose of pop art in surrealism and its key role in establishing an obscure
relationship between art and reality.
