Road signs are an unavoidable encounter as they are meant to catch our attention whilst driving. When we look at these signs, the first thought may be to yield, slow down, or watch out for road work. Yet, as these signs become repetitive in our lives, will other thoughts start to cross our mind? These thoughts can have both positive and negative connotations, each bringing to light a part of ourselves and our journeys. I explored this idea of road signs and the memories or thoughts they bring to mind through my Sustained Investigation.
Each image has a different take on incorporating the road signs and memories together. For some of my work, I made the sign large and had the memory associated with it faded in the background, to show those memories are now faint for me. For the more prevalent memories, the sign moved from their original place to a spot I associated the sign with, or the memory was found inside of the road sign. All of my photographs include a discrete handwritten statement that ties the memory back to the road sign. These three variations, and the adding of a statement on each photograph, stayed consistent throughout my work.
